This is a drawing of a woman’s head in three-quarter profile facing left by Luc-Albert Moreau, made with what looks like graphite or charcoal on paper. I can imagine the artist standing at an easel in 1926, taking in the sitter in front of him. What was she thinking? She seems strong, but melancholy. Look at the shading around the eyes and cheekbones! Moreau expertly captures the light hitting her face, and there's a real softness to the rendering. He builds up the form with these delicate marks, achieving a wonderful sense of volume and depth, using thin hatching to build up darker tones. You know, drawing like this is hard! It takes so much looking, and feeling your way across the page. Moreau had to really slow down and get intimate with the subject. I wonder, do you think about her life when you look at it, just as I do?
