Maria Bozoky made this watercolor and ink painting, "Fruit Market in Prague," which is about the size of a sketchbook page. I just love how it's a riot of loose, scribbly lines and washes of color, like she was trying to catch a memory before it disappeared. I can imagine Bozoky standing there, maybe a little cold, quickly sketching and painting, trying to get the feel of the place. The colors are warm—reds, yellows, browns—but the lines are restless, like the market is buzzing with energy. I'm particularly drawn to the figure in the foreground. Look at that beard! Each stroke feels like a little observation, a way of understanding the world. It reminds me that painting is a conversation, an exchange between the artist and the subject, and between artists across time, inspiring each other to see and feel in new ways. There's no right or wrong way to interpret it; it’s about letting the painting speak to you.
