This woodblock print, created by Yashima Gakutei, presents us with a scene of a page-girl offering clothes to a lady. Note the curtain, adorned with circular motifs – a pattern echoing through time, reminiscent of ancient cosmological symbols. The circular patterns on the curtain invoke the celestial spheres, or perhaps the cyclical nature of existence itself. Such motifs are not confined to Japanese art; one sees echoes in the mandalas of Tibetan Buddhism and the rosette windows of Gothic cathedrals. Observe the psychological weight – the comfort, the enclosure of the curtain. It is a womb-like space, offering refuge from the outside world. This resonates with our primal need for safety, echoing our earliest memories of protection and care. We are drawn into this intimate moment, subconsciously reminded of our own vulnerabilities and desires for security. Thus, the circular motif has, through time, become an archetype: an enduring symbol of unity, wholeness, and the cyclical nature of life, death, and rebirth, continually resurfacing in our collective consciousness.
