Curatorial notes
Giuliano Giampiccoli etched this landscape with antique ruins and a lion monument in the 18th century. The ruins evoke a sense of decay and the transience of human achievements, reflecting the classical theme of "memento mori". The lion statue—a symbol of strength and regality—perched amidst the ruins, embodies a complex interplay between power and vulnerability. Lions have appeared since ancient times, such as in the Ishtar Gate of Babylon, a testament to enduring symbolic power. The presence of the animal in this artwork suggests a connection between the glory of the past and the potential for its resurgence. This image engages us on a deep, subconscious level as the lion, despite its symbolic weight, is juxtaposed against the decaying pillars, questioning the permanence of power. This cyclical progression reminds us that symbols evolve, taking on new meanings across historical contexts, forever resurfacing in our collective consciousness.
