Editor: Here we have "Cadmium Red, maroon," made by Chemical and Pigment Co., with a date on the label of 1/24/34. I find it fascinating to see raw pigment presented this way. What stands out to you? Curator: The means of production are at the forefront here. It highlights the commodification of color, breaking down the romantic notion of the artist as solely responsible for creating a work. How does this challenge our understanding of artistic labor? Editor: I guess it makes me consider the worker who created the pigment as part of the artistic process. Curator: Exactly. The labor involved in producing materials is often invisible. It changes how we view the value of the artwork. Editor: I never considered that the creation of pigment was part of the process. That's a great perspective.
