Brug over een sluis

Curatorial notes
Willem Springer Jr. sketched this "Bridge over a Sluice" to showcase the geometry of engineering. Bridges have long been potent symbols of connection and transition, both physically and metaphorically. The bridge, an architectural marvel, embodies mankind’s impulse to overcome natural barriers, to unite what is separated. This motif echoes in ancient Roman aqueducts and medieval archways. Think of the "Ponte Vecchio" in Florence or London Bridge, vibrant centers of life erected upon these crossings. The bridge is more than a passage, it’s a place of encounter, a physical manifestation of hope for connection, be it for trade, love, or conquest. In its essence, the bridge encapsulates our yearning to transcend limitations, linking not just shores but also past and future, thus becoming an enduring symbol of human aspiration.
