Owen Jones created this study of honeysuckle and convolvulus for ornamental use. Here, these flowers intertwine, symbolizing connection and affection, as was common in Victorian symbolic language. The honeysuckle, with its intoxicating fragrance and clinging vines, is a motif that has wound its way through art history, echoing sentiments of love and attachment. We see echoes of this in Renaissance tapestries, where floral patterns create an atmosphere of idyllic harmony. Yet, in Jones's work, the flowers take on a distinctly modern sensibility. The seemingly endless pattern evokes a sense of growth and the cyclical nature of life. This intertwining captures a powerful human desire to connect with and understand our world through its symbols. Their fragrance and beauty evoke a longing for a simpler, more natural state of being.
