Editor: Kathy Prendergast’s "BLACK MAP SERIES (America North Central)" is a striking piece. The sheer darkness is almost overwhelming, dotted with what look like tiny pinpricks of light. What are your thoughts on how Prendergast uses such stark contrast? Curator: It's interesting, isn't it? It feels like staring into a night sky, but also like looking at a wound. Perhaps those pinpricks are not light, but something else entirely. It makes you question what you're seeing, doesn’t it? The map becomes a metaphor, a terrain of the mind. What kind of map do you think she is trying to make? Editor: That's a beautiful reading of it! I hadn't considered the 'wound' aspect, but now I can't unsee it. It makes the piece so much more complex. Thanks for sharing. Curator: My pleasure! It's always fun to see art through fresh eyes.
