Curatorial notes
Geldolph Adriaan Kessler captured this photographic portrait of travelling companions sometime in the early 20th century. The sepia tones and the subjects' formal attire lend the image a sense of solemnity and introspection. The composition is structured around the figures, arranged in a somewhat hierarchical manner. A vertical stack grounds the subjects, while the wooden panelling behind them creates a backdrop of rigid lines, contrasting with the soft curves of the faces. The arrangement invites a semiotic reading: the gaze and posture of each individual, and the subtle gradations in light and shadow all communicate complex relationships and interior states. The print destabilises any fixed meaning, instead evoking questions about identity, social dynamics and the very act of representation. Kessler's attention to detail functions not merely as an aesthetic choice, but as a deeper exploration of the human condition. The work encourages us to engage with photography as a medium capable of revealing the unseen.
