This print was made by Isaac Weissenbruch, presenting a man fishing by a church on what is presumably a Sunday. The composition splits the scene between the tranquil leisure of fishing on the right and the solemnity of the churchgoers to the left. The stark black lines emphasize the contrast between the man and the church, revealing a tension between labor and leisure, secular and sacred. There is a semiotic contrast between the 'horizontal' plane of worldly pursuits and the 'vertical' aspiration of the church tower. Look at the deliberate positioning of the fisherman and the churchgoers. The man is at ease, in his own world, while the congregation is in a formal gathering. The image probes at the viewer: where do our earthly interests lie, and how do they mirror our values? It challenges us to reflect on our place within this social and spiritual dichotomy.
