Charles Philipon created this print, "Man en vrouw in futuristische mode," with lithography. Here we see a satire of future fashion, the exaggerated forms speaking volumes about the anxieties and aspirations of the time. The most striking aspect is the absurdly large sleeves of the woman’s dress. This echoes the Renaissance fascination with voluminous sleeves, symbols of wealth and status. But here, they are inflated to the point of the grotesque. Such exaggerations carry a psychological weight. The oversized sleeves can be seen as a manifestation of the collective fear of the new and unknown future and the subconscious desire for excess and display. The non-linear progression of fashion is evident; styles resurface, evolve, and take on new meanings. What was once a symbol of status becomes a caricature of itself, reflecting society’s ever-changing values and anxieties.
