This is a drawing by Giovanni Battista Gaulli, also known as Baciccio, made with graphite and grey wash. Baciccio worked in the era of the Counter-Reformation, a period when the Catholic Church sought to reaffirm its authority. This drawing is a study for a fresco, and thus represents the all-embracing, triumphal vision of the church with Christ, God, and the Virgin Mary, surrounded by a multitude of saints and angels.
