This is a drawing by Giovanni Battista Gaulli, also known as Baciccio, made with graphite and grey wash. Baciccio worked in the era of the Counter-Reformation, a period when the Catholic Church sought to reaffirm its authority. This drawing is a study for a fresco, and thus represents the all-embracing, triumphal vision of the church with Christ, God, and the Virgin Mary, surrounded by a multitude of saints and angels. The upward movement, the sea of faces, and the theatrical gestures aim to create an overwhelming emotional experience for the viewer. The use of "quadratura," or illusionistic painting, expands the architectural space of the church. The representation of the divine reflects a highly gendered and hierarchical society with the male figures of God and Christ central to the composition, embodying spiritual authority, while the Virgin Mary represents purity and submission. This drawing offers a glimpse into the power dynamics of the time and how they were visually manifested.
