This is the cover of "De Vrije Kunstenaar", a Dutch magazine from July 1, 1945. It's printed in black and white, and the drawing has this great, raw energy, a feeling like it was sketched quickly but with purpose. I'm drawn to the objects surrounding the head. There is a painter's palette, an open book, and a violin. It makes me wonder, what do these objects mean together? Is this a picture of an artist's mind? The texture looks a little rough. You can almost feel the tooth of the paper. This roughness, it feels like a deliberate choice, not something hidden or smoothed over. It's like the artist is saying, "Here it is, process and all". And that reminds me of someone like Philip Guston, who wasn’t afraid to show the messy, human side of art. Like him, there is a sense that art is about the process of making something out of nothing, about embracing the journey, not just the destination.
