This is a postcard, “Briefkaart aan Willem Bogtman,” by Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst. Although not dated, it’s an artifact in itself, a carrier of words and intent. It's interesting to think about what it might have been like to have sent and received this card, a casual gesture that now feels so precious. I imagine Holst, pen in hand, leaning over this card, lost in thought before committing his words to paper. I see a flurry of handwritten script, a mix of urgency and thoughtfulness. The texture of the paper probably felt smooth under his hand, yet firm enough to anchor his thoughts. Notice the stamp, a tiny square filled with detail, a little emblem of a past era. The postmark is a blur of ink, but it speaks to the journey this card has taken. Holst's note reminds us that art is also a conversation, a dialogue across time and space. It's like we're eavesdropping on a private exchange, but at the same time, we are participants in the ongoing exchange of human expression, and its messy, imperfect, and beautiful communications.
