James Brooks created this untitled work of art with paint on canvas. Notice the prominent lavender arc that stretches across the canvas, its form reminiscent of a rainbow or an archway. Across cultures, the rainbow signifies a bridge between the earthly and the divine. Think of Iris, the Greek goddess, or the Old Testament narrative in which God sends the rainbow as a symbol of his promise not to flood the earth again. The archway appears in Roman triumphal arches and Gothic cathedrals and often serves as a threshold or portal. In psychoanalytic terms, the archway can represent a subconscious desire for connection and transition. Brooks’ composition evokes a powerful emotional response, a subconscious yearning for transcendence, carried across time. These symbols continue to evolve and take on new meanings.
