Curatorial notes
Aert Pietersz made this drawing, "Crucifixion with a Founder and his Family," with pen in grey-brown and blue ink, over black chalk. Pietersz worked during a tumultuous time in the Netherlands, amidst the Eighty Years' War, a struggle for independence from Spanish rule intertwined with religious conflict. The work depicts the crucifixion, but it also includes the family of a patron, front and center, as witnesses and participants. Their presence melds the sacred narrative with the earthly concerns of wealth and lineage. It’s a complicated dance between faith, power, and the desire for immortality. Who gets remembered, who is written into the story? Pietersz situates his patrons within the spiritual narrative and subtly challenges traditional representations. In doing so, he acknowledges the shifting social landscape and renegotiates the terms of devotion and commemoration. The drawing embodies the personal and communal tensions of its era.
