This is Andy Warhol's, Album of a Mat Queen and it looks like it was screen printed, which is a process. The repetition of the mat queen creates a pattern, a surface, but with subtle differences, like the ghost of a layer printed slightly off. The orange is like a day-glo sunset, or maybe a construction cone. The image isn't perfectly aligned; it's got this real, human touch despite the mechanical process. Look closely, and you can see the texture of the ink, like a slightly raised, almost waxy surface. There's a deliberate imperfection, which to me, is Warhol all over. Thinking about art as an ongoing conversation, you could see this echoing Robert Rauschenberg’s own silkscreen paintings. They both knew that art doesn't have to be precious or perfect; it can be messy, imperfect, and all the more beautiful for it.
