Curatorial notes

Cornelis Vreedenburgh made this drawing, "Houses and a haystack along a country road," with graphite on paper. The lines are so alive; look how they swarm together to form a haystack, a roof. The network of marks creates a sense of depth. The shading reminds me of when I'm trying to get a handle on the volume of an object. See how some marks are darker than others? It's all about pressure. I love the way Vreedenburgh lets the lines breathe. They aren't overworked. The texture of the paper becomes part of the drawing. Vreedenburgh reminds me of Morandi; both artists teach us to appreciate the simple things in life, like a haystack or a bottle. It's all about looking closely and finding beauty in the everyday. Art is an ongoing conversation, an exchange of ideas across time.
