This is an untitled collage by René Magritte. The Surrealist movement, to which Magritte belonged, sought to unlock the unconscious mind through startling juxtapositions. Magritte's work often disrupts conventional ways of seeing, challenging viewers to question the relationship between reality and representation. In this collage, the floating eyeballs, the starkly contrasting images, and the musical form seem to defy any logical narrative. The woman touching the building can be seen as either caressing or rejecting it. It suggests the complex and often contradictory relationship individuals have with established structures. What is certain is that the building and the woman are not on equal ground. What results is a dream-like scenario that resonates with the anxieties and uncertainties of modern life. The artist, in his own words, sought to create images that provoke "the mystery without which the world could not exist.” The personal, emotional experience of alienation is not so far from our own.
