Kaws’s ‘Ankle Bracelet’ is made up of bold cartoon outlines and blocks of colour, a dance between precision and something more loose and intuitive. The overall effect is both playful and thought-provoking, a feeling I like to chase in my own work. Here, Kaws layers colours to create depth and movement. The turquoise and pink lines pulse across the figure's surface, like exposed veins beneath the skin. What strikes me most is the mouth, a jumble of rainbow hues, like a sweet explosion. The whole piece feels incredibly physical, the colours bright, sharp, and almost touchable. It reminds me of Yoshitomo Nara's works, which also explore similar themes of innocence and vulnerability through cartoonish figures. Ultimately, it's a conversation starter, an invitation to think about how we see and interpret the world around us.
