Richard Paul Lohse made this geometrical abstraction with bright acrylic paint; each square and rectangle looks like it's been meticulously planned to create visual harmony. I imagine the artist working systematically, almost like a mathematician solving an equation. Each color seems carefully chosen and placed to balance the composition. The hard edges and flat surfaces give it a sense of precision. I wonder if Lohse was trying to create a new kind of visual language, one based on logic and order. It reminds me of Piet Mondrian's work, but with a warmer palette. Artists are always talking to each other, across time and space. And even though this piece is so controlled, there's still something playful about it, the way the colors interact and create a sense of movement. It reminds me that painting can be both intellectual and sensual at the same time.
