Pierre Jean-Baptiste van Reeth created this print, "Gezicht op een druk bevolkte straat met stier en een jongen op een ladder"– or, “View of a crowded street with bull and a boy on a ladder” – during the 19th century. As urbanization increased and the rise of industrial capitalism took hold, this piece gives us a glimpse into the bustling intersections of urban and rural life at the time. At the center, we see a gathering around a bull – the figures seem to represent various social classes, with their diverse clothing and activities. A child reaches out to the bull, while another climbs a ladder, perhaps to escape the commotion. The image gives us an intimate view into the social dynamics of labor and leisure, class and identity. Van Reeth draws our attention to the ordinary lives of the individuals who make up the fabric of this society. As you consider this image, reflect on how the intersection of urban and rural life shaped not only the landscape but also the identities and experiences of the people living through this transformative era.
