This is a design for a window in the Utrecht Cathedral by Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst. He probably made it with colored pencil and chalk. The sepia tones and graphic lines give it an austere feel, but there's something hopeful in the gesture. Look closely at the lines. Some are soft and smudged, like the shadow behind the hand, and others are sharp and define the edges of each pane of glass. I wonder if this is about finding clarity through process, or perhaps a kind of divine vision. I'm drawn to the lower right corner, where a shard of green peaks out. It's a reminder of the earth and the life that exists beyond the walls of the cathedral. It reminds me of Mondrian, who also worked with such rigid geometries. Both artists explore the tension between abstraction and representation. Art is a conversation, after all. It’s more about the questions it provokes than any answers it gives.
