Hendrik Gerrit ten Cate made this drawing of the gateway at Zuilenstein Castle near Amerongen using pen in grey in 1833. The drawing is a study in contrasts between organic and architectural forms, shadow and light. Cate carefully balances the composition of the structures, foliage, and bodies of water that echo and complement each other throughout the picture plane. Notice how Cate uses the organic form of the tree on the left to frame the architectural structure of the gateway, creating a dialogue between nature and built environment. The horizontal emphasis of the bridge and the reflections in the water contribute to the sense of calm. The artist’s meticulous strokes invite us to consider not only what is depicted, but how it is depicted. The structure is not just seen but experienced. It is an evocative study into the interplay of forms and textures.
