Curatorial notes
This engraving of Saint Paul was created by Giovanni Battista Cavalieri in the late 16th century. The apostle is depicted with two powerful symbols: a book and a sword. The book signifies his role as an author of scripture, spreading the word of Christianity, while the sword is a more complex emblem. Initially, the sword represents Paul's martyrdom by beheading, but it also evolves into a metaphor for the penetrating and transformative power of divine truth. The 'sword of the Spirit' as it is called in Ephesians. We can trace this motif back to ancient depictions of heroes and gods wielding weapons, symbols of authority and power. In Paul's case, however, the sword takes on a spiritual dimension. This symbol transcends time, reappearing in various guises throughout art history. It’s a potent reminder of the ongoing battle between spiritual insight and earthly ignorance, a cycle of death and rebirth, continually reshaping our understanding.
