This Vase was made by Gudrun Baudisch, but the date remains a mystery. Standing before it, I feel like I'm looking at a painterly object—it could almost be watercolor on paper, except it's a vase! The colors are watery and soft, blues and greens and a touch of brown, all flowing together. The painted marks have a lovely, free quality. There is a strong emphasis on gesture, with visible brushstrokes adding texture and movement to the surface. I wonder what Baudisch was thinking as she painted these marks. Were they just having fun with the fluidity of the medium? I love the little handle ears, they're sort of like tiny outstretched hands. For me, this vase speaks to the ongoing dialogue between different forms of art. Baudisch's vase reminds me that art is always in conversation with itself, artists drawing inspiration from one another across time and different mediums!

Gudrun Baudisch, like Vally Wieselthier, worked at the Wiener Werkstätte Ceramic Workshop during the late 1920s. She also designed textiles produced by the Wiener Werkstätte. In addition, she designed ceramics for other firms and had her own studios in Vienna and Berlin during the 1930s and 1940s.
