Nelson Shanks made this painting, Sequins, using oil paint. There is a real mix of textures going on here. I’m thinking about Nelson painting away in his studio, trying to work out the differences between the smooth skin and the bright shimmer of the sequins, or the roughness of the wood against the softness of the cushion. I can imagine him thinking about the history of painting, and how many artists before him have tried to capture the sensuality of the human form. It’s almost as if he is having a conversation with painters of the past through his own work. Nelson’s painting feels very physical – I can almost feel the different textures on my own skin. I love how the coolness of the blue sequins contrasts with the warmth of the skin. For me, that contrast is what makes this painting so alive. It reminds me that artists are constantly exchanging ideas, remixing old traditions, and inspiring new ways of seeing.
