Egon Schiele made this watercolor and pencil drawing of the Spitalskirche church in Molding with thin strokes, the lines scratched, and the colors muddied. I can imagine him, working quickly and nervously. The drawing seems so immediate, like a snapshot. It's as if he's trying to capture the feeling of the place, more than the literal architecture. Schiele has such an incredible gift for making everything feel raw and exposed. It's amazing how much tension he can create with just a few lines and some transparent washes of color. I always think about how he’s related to other artists like Munch. They both knew how to make their marks stand for something more than themselves. Their works are not just images but vessels of feeling. It makes you think about what it means to see and to feel, and how that gets translated into a painting.
