Charles-François Daubigny created this print of Saint Jerome. The composition evokes a sublime natural setting, with the towering cliffs framing a lone figure of Saint Jerome in the foreground, who is dwarfed by the imposing landscape. Notice how Daubigny uses the medium of printmaking to create a tonal range that emphasizes the contrast between light and shadow. The diagonal lines etched into the cliffs create a sense of depth and volume, as the varying densities suggest textures of the rock. The scale and grandeur may echo the philosophical concept of the sublime, in which nature's immensity inspires awe and humility. The figure, almost an afterthought within the broad scope of the landscape, serves as a signifier, a symbol of human vulnerability set against the backdrop of the infinite. It could be argued that the artist destabilizes established meanings; is this a representation of religious devotion or a commentary on human insignificance?
