Hendrik Doijer made this black and white photograph, Stroomversnelling in de Mindrineti, at an unknown date, and for me, its high contrast and almost abstract play of light and dark evokes a feeling of being immersed in a memory. The way the light glares off the water, obliterating detail, creates a kind of visual drama. It's almost as if the camera is struggling to capture the scene, or maybe the artist is more interested in the play of light itself. There’s a real tension between the areas of high contrast. This reminds me of the work of Minor White, who was similarly interested in capturing the spiritual dimension of landscape. Ultimately, the photograph feels unresolved. It’s a moment captured in time, but it also feels like a fragment of something larger, something we can never quite grasp. And that, I think, is what makes it so compelling.
