Paul Klee made this watercolor, *Possessed Girl*, at some point in his career, but when I look at her I don’t think, girl, I think imp. You know, like a little devil. The face has these orange dots for cheeks, but it's the mouth that gets me. The teeth are like little blocks, some are missing. I can imagine Klee painting it, shifting things around until she emerges, little by little. Maybe he was thinking about masks or the way we hide our true selves. Klee plays with color and line, using them to create a face that's both familiar and strange. It reminds me a bit of James Ensor. Both artists get into the mindset of, like, what does it mean to see someone, really see them, and all their weirdness and beauty. I can imagine him making a similar face, a painting that's not quite real but full of feeling. It’s like he's asking us to see the world in a new, kind of spooky way.
