This is Richard Diebenkorn's drawing of a female nude, just lines on paper, and you can really feel the process. The marks are so immediate, like a jazz riff. There's no messing around, just a direct response to the model. The line is wiry, a bit nervous, but also confident. Look at the way he defines the space with a few quick strokes, it's all about capturing the essence of the figure in a moment. I love the way the lines seem to search for the form, not quite closing, leaving gaps. It's honest, you know? Like he’s thinking out loud with his pencil. It reminds me of Matisse's drawings, that same economy of line, that same search for pure form. It’s all about seeing, feeling, and then letting it flow through your hand. There is no right or wrong, just a conversation with the subject.
