Here’s a beautiful panel with calligraphy on textile by an anonymous artist. The work features sinuous, elegant lines stitched in gold against a deep red ground. I imagine the artist, seated perhaps, carefully guiding the needle, each stitch building up the forms of the script. What were they thinking as they worked? Were they in a meditative state, lost in the rhythm of the process? The texture of the thread catches the light, giving the letters a subtle shimmer. The contrast between the gold and red creates a visual vibration, a kind of optical buzz that animates the surface. See how the lines curve and intersect, creating a complex interplay of positive and negative space, of light and shadow. The piece reminds me of other calligraphic works I’ve seen, and it’s amazing to think of the ongoing conversation between artists across centuries, each building on the work of those who came before. In this way, art offers us a space for contemplation, inviting us to pause and consider the many layers of meaning woven into its very fabric.

In Islamic Africa, calligraphy is not only found on writing boards and paper, but also on blades, ceramics, and textiles. Woven into this cloth are two verses from chapters 21 and 96 from the Qur’an. On the right is “Taught man what he did not know,” which refers to God’s gift of knowledge to humans. The left one, in which God addresses the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), reads: “We did not send you except as a mercy for humankind.” Such striking textiles would be hung in private homes, mosques, or Qur’anic schools. Interpretation of text:Taught man what he did not know.We did not send you but as a mercy for humankind.
