This silver medal was crafted by Hendrik Lageman to commemorate Willem Frederik, Prince of Orange, being inaugurated in Amsterdam as sovereign prince. The medal's design is dominated by its circular form, a shape often associated with unity and completion. On one side, we see a profile portrait of Willem Frederik, meticulously detailed, set against a backdrop filled with an inscription that curves to meet the circular edge, framing the prince's image. The opposite side of the medal features inscribed text as its central focus, celebrating the inauguration in Amsterdam. Both sides of the medal display a careful arrangement of text and image, where balance and legibility are key. The uniform, circular arrangement and the choice of silver as a medium underscores the medal's function as a symbol of authority, inviting us to consider how such objects play a role in constructing and reinforcing social hierarchies.
