This is Charles Mertens’ print, "Meisje kijkt via een dakvenster naar buiten" or "Girl Looks Out of a Skylight," made in the late 19th century. Mertens was a Dutch artist, capturing a particular moment in European history. Here we see a young woman gazing out of what appears to be an attic window, her posture suggesting a quiet contemplation. Consider the historical context: as industrialization transformed European cities, many sought solace in idealized visions of nature. Yet, here, the woman's view is not of a pastoral landscape, but of rooftops and chimneys. How does her gaze reflect the changing roles of women during this period? Is she longing for something beyond her domestic sphere? Does this image subvert traditional representations of women by suggesting a desire for something beyond domesticity? This print invites us to reflect on the intersection of gender, class, and environment in shaping individual experience.
