Corneille’s "Tiger in Love" presents a dreamlike scene, rendered with bold colors and simplified forms. The way Corneille lays down these colors, with such directness, makes me think about artmaking as a process of continuous decisions. The painting is flat, almost graphic, and the colors feel saturated, pure. Look how the bright reds clash with the greens, creating a visual vibration. The paint handling is straightforward. You can see the traces of the brushstrokes, each one deliberate. I’m drawn to the tiger's face, those almond-shaped eyes staring out at us, and then there's this figure that’s hard to quite decipher, lying below. It gives you the sense of overhearing a secret. "Tiger in Love" reminds me a bit of Matisse, that same joyous approach to color and form. It’s like Corneille is inviting us to enter a world where the rules are bent, and imagination reigns supreme. Ultimately, art is an invitation to embrace ambiguity, to find our own meanings within the artist's vision.
