This is a page of annotations by George Hendrik Breitner, made sometime between the late 19th and early 20th century. Breitner lived in a time of great social change; industrialization and urbanization were changing the landscape and the social structures of the Netherlands. As a painter and photographer, Breitner captured the energy of modern life, especially the lives of the working class and the urban landscape of Amsterdam. His work often focused on capturing fleeting moments of everyday life. In his paintings, he often depicted women from behind, in profile, or in motion, suggesting a desire to maintain a degree of privacy and mystery. Here, Breitner’s handwriting fills the page with addresses, names, and numbers. The notations offer an intimate glimpse into the artist's life. They reveal the intersection of the personal and professional, and provide a sense of the artist's presence and immediate experience. This deeply personal work creates a feeling of intimacy and connection with the artist.
