M.C. Escher made this print, Metamorphosis III, with a focus on precision, a meticulous dedication to process. What strikes me is how he embraces the graphic potential of the medium. Look at the contrast between the stark black and white geometric shapes which morph into something else. The solid blacks are so complete that it really gives weight to the entire piece. It's as if he wants to expose the bones of the structure underneath what we see. He is using the negative space as much as the positive, isn't he? The same care and attention to detail are evident in every part of the image. Escher's fascination with pattern and tessellation remind me of William Morris. He transforms the shapes in a mathematical, almost scientific, manner. The whole piece feels like one big breath. From bees to horses, Escher invites us to consider the potential of transformation, of constant change, and the never-ending possibilities of art itself.
