Constantin Flondor made this photograph, Ephemeral Netting (Deia Forest), using string or wire in a forest setting. It feels almost like a drawing, like he’s using the trees as a page, or a canvas. The piece is made up of straight lines in a way that sort of flattens out the depth of the forest. The cool blue of the string contrasts against the warmth of the forest floor, creating a spatial tension. I’m thinking about how this piece seems to invite us to think about landscape in a new way, like a place of invention, almost like a stage set. The string seems to pull some hidden architecture from out of the forest. The way Flondor uses line here reminds me a little bit of Fred Sandback, who made sculptures out of yarn. Both artists invite us to see space as a kind of malleable, ever-changing material.
