Arnold Peter Weisz-Kubínčan painted 'Little Houses by the Forest' with what looks like oil paint, maybe during a summer afternoon? Looking at this painting, I imagine the artist outside with his easel, squinting at the light, trying to find a way to get all that green onto the canvas. I mean, just look at those brushstrokes – short, thick dabs of olive, emerald, and ochre wrestling with each other. Is this the impression of the forest or a real place? See how the brushstrokes create a kind of restless energy? I think he really liked the way one color smudged into another. It reminds me of some of Klimt's landscapes. Like Weisz-Kubínčan, Klimt created places that are both real and unreal. It’s like they’re whispering, “Come closer, but don’t get lost.”
