This portrait of an unknown man was made by Joseph Franck, sometime between 1825 and 1883. The sitter's formal military attire is what gives the image its meaning. In the 19th century, it was common for people of status and authority to have their portraits made. This portrait, typical of the time, uses visual codes to communicate the sitter's position in society. His uniform is adorned with buttons, epaulettes, and a medal. The man's stern expression and erect posture further emphasize his authority and perhaps reflect the social values of the time, such as duty, honor, and discipline. This image can be examined further by researching the history of military portraiture in the 19th century. Such study can reveal a great deal about the social and institutional context in which it was made.
