This self-portrait was painted by Pablo Picasso, during his blue period. Look at the way he builds the image with thin layers of blue paint, like a process of feeling his way through the depths of a single colour. There's a real sensitivity in the painting, the cool blues and whites capture a feeling of melancholic detachment. The surface is smooth, but you can see the marks of the brushstrokes moving in different directions, it’s almost like he’s mapping the contours of his own face with the paint. The redness in his beard feels almost shocking in contrast to the rest of the painting, lending warmth to an otherwise cold visage. I think of other artists who explored similar colour palettes, like Yves Klein or even some of the old masters like El Greco. But Picasso brings his own unique energy and vision, which makes this painting so compelling. It’s a reminder that art is always an ongoing conversation, an exchange of ideas across time and space.
