Curator: Welcome. We're standing before Carel Christiaan Antony Last's drawing, "Taferelen uit het leven van een jonge vader", created sometime between 1842 and 1887. It’s done with pen on paper. Editor: Oh, my gosh, look at this! It's like a snapshot, or rather a bunch of them, all cramped on the page. Little windows into, I guess, early parenthood? It’s cramped, frantic, hilarious even. Curator: Precisely! It’s an exploration of domesticity rendered with a keen, observational eye. The use of pen allows for fine, detailed lines that delineate each vignette distinctly. Observe the compositions within each scene: they vary dramatically, yet coalesce as a whole. Editor: Each little world has its own story brewing! Some sweet, some… not so much, heh. Check out the dad clumsily trying to hold the baby in one of those scenes! Like he has NO idea what he’s doing! And in another scene, the wife seems like she’s just leaving him with the kid? He’s like, “Oh god no.” Curator: Semiotically, each figure, object, and arrangement constitutes a sign, a small window. The romantic ideals are clearly undercut by an element of Modernist skepticism of domestic life, specifically patriarchy, with Last portraying the reality of parental anxieties and the performative nature of familial bliss. Editor: Ha! Performative bliss—nailed it! Though I think there’s fondness too, despite all the chaos. Aww, in one shot, it looks like the child is sleeping with all kinds of stuff all around its crib. Total chaos! He kind of captured it. It doesn't need to be all picture-perfect to be just right. Curator: Indeed, Last’s work possesses a raw honesty. This departs significantly from conventional portrayals during the period, marking his particular approach to form and its engagement with modernism. Editor: You can tell, though, that there are some rough parts of life to have children. Curator: Indeed, I agree. Last manages to get his point across with modern artistry. Editor: It sure does!
