Editor: This drawing, "On the Seashore", is attributed to an imitator of Louis-Eugène Boudin. It depicts women on a pier looking out to sea, rendered in soft charcoal. It feels very domestic to me, almost claustrophobic. What do you see in this piece? Curator: I see the performance of femininity during a time of immense societal change. The women, framed by the pier, are confined, yet the open sea hints at freedom. Consider how seaside leisure was becoming increasingly accessible, yet social expectations still heavily policed women's behaviour. How does that tension resonate with you? Editor: I hadn’t thought about the contrast between the open sea and their confinement. That makes the drawing much more complex. Curator: Exactly. It speaks volumes about the limited freedoms afforded to women even as new opportunities arose.
