Arthur Bowen Davies created ‘Moonlight on the Grassy Bank’ with monochrome gestural marks, like it came into being through shifting states of error and intuition. I sympathize with Davies, imagining him thinking about the physicality of the medium. Is the ink thick or thin? The gestural marks shape our experience and contribute to the emotional resonance of the work. Davies must have embraced ambiguity and uncertainty in the figures with raised hands, allowing for multiple interpretations. The figures reach up to the sky and trees as if they were performing a ritual. Davies must have been inspired by the works of other painters. Artists are always in conversation, and exchange ideas across time, inspiring one another's creativity. As a painter I embrace ambiguity allowing for multiple interpretations.
