This is a sketchbook with 95 pages of drawings based on paintings, created by Andreas Schelfhout. Born in 1787, Schelfhout lived through a period of enormous social upheaval as enlightenment ideals spread, influencing revolutions and changing the social order across Europe and the Americas. Schelfhout focused on landscapes, and was committed to capturing the Dutch countryside, especially its winter scenes. Though class isn’t immediately obvious from the outside, landscapes were a popular subject with the rising middle class. Landscape art allowed city dwellers a connection to nature. This sketchbook provided Schelfhout an opportunity to develop a style that resonated with the desires of the time. It reflects a yearning for stability and a connection to the land amidst rapid social changes. It also speaks to the artist's personal connection to the Dutch landscape.
