Henri Matisse painted this still life on canvas, sometime in his long career between 1869 and 1954. Matisse, who came of age in the late 19th century, lived through a time of enormous social upheaval in Europe. Matisse was associated with the Fauvism movement, known for its bold use of color and simplified forms. But you know, when I look at this painting, I see not just a collection of objects but a deeper exploration of identity and perception. As a privileged white man, Matisse’s perspective was inherently shaped by his social position. Yet, here he seems to be pushing against traditional modes of representation. The composition is flattened, and the colors are intense and non-naturalistic. He said, ‘I don’t paint things, I only paint the difference between things.’ Doesn’t that make you wonder, what differences was he trying to capture? How does it make you feel? In his move away from traditional representation, we can reflect on how identities are constructed and perceived. It is an invitation to consider the diverse ways of seeing and being in the world.
