Editor: This stark, untitled etching by Per Kirkeby really strikes me. The heavy blacks against the stark white paper create such a raw, almost unsettling feel. What can you tell me about it? Curator: Considering Kirkeby's background in geology, it's fascinating to see how he translates natural forms through the labor-intensive process of etching. The materials themselves—the copper plate, the acid, the paper—are all active participants in creating this image. How does the process itself inform your understanding of the work? Editor: That's interesting. I hadn't considered the active role of the materials in creating the image. Curator: It invites us to consider artmaking as a form of material engagement, challenging any simple separation between "high art" and the labor involved in its creation. Editor: That makes me appreciate the textures and the marks within the image more. Thank you for sharing your perspective.
