Shōtei Hokuju’s woodblock print, "View of Futami Beach at Ise," presents us with a world where color and form blend harmoniously. The deep blues of the sea and sky contrast with the ochre and red of the landscape, creating a rhythmic interplay across the pictorial plane. The composition is carefully structured to lead the eye: from the foreground figures, up along the gently curving shoreline, towards the iconic wedded rocks, joined by a sacred rope. Hokuju masterfully uses line to define shape, but also to suggest movement; the wave, for example, appears to surge forward with dynamic energy. This work destabilizes the traditional landscape genre. The abstracted forms and bold color choices elevate the scene beyond mere representation. Instead, it’s an exploration of the interplay between nature, culture, and perception. This print invites us to contemplate how the world is not just seen, but also felt and interpreted.
