Here we see Sebastiano Conca's sketch, rendering the Holy Family in sepia ink. The dominant symbol here is the workshop itself: Saint Joseph, the carpenter, is at work while the young Jesus sweeps the floor, a broom in hand. The broom and carpentry tools evoke the everyday, yet within a sacred context they take on a rich significance. Think of the numerous depictions across time where domestic tasks elevate to the divine, such as the spinning wheel associated with the Virgin Mary. Here, Jesus sweeping is less about cleanliness and more about humility, a virtue echoed in his eventual sacrifice. It reminds us of the cyclical nature of symbols – how they reappear, evolve, and take on new meanings. Like the ouroboros, this image reflects the continuous rebirth of ideas and their transformation across the ages, rooted in the human psyche. Here, we are invited to contemplate the spiritual within the mundane, a concept forever etched in our collective memory.
